Where Do I Go to Find the Truth?

Gary Young

The world today is filled with people who are searching for meaning in their lives. There are also hundreds of people who claim to have the answers to life's problems, and who sell books, appear on television or publicise themselves in other ways in order to promote their views. Despite this, there are still literally millions of people who are desirous of knowing what the real meaning of life is, and where they might find it.

Jesus was someone who knew where truth was to be found. He knew that it was only by following Him that mankind can come to a knowledge of the truth and be saved. He said:

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8: 32)

I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14: 6).

It is quite clear that Jesus claimed to have the truth that all men seek and that all men need. Of course, it might be quite easy to make such a claim but quite difficult to prove it. When we look at the life that Christ led, however, and the beauty and simplicity of His teachings, we can see that His claim has merit and is worth investigating. Where then do we go to find out about Jesus?

There are many people who claim to know about Jesus or to have some insight into His life. Their writings, however, are mere theories and in many cases they conflict with what the Bible says about Jesus. Others claim that they have some special revelation which Jesus has given to them alone, but this too is in conflict with the Scripture. Jesus was talking to all His followers when He made the statement recorded above that "ye shall know the truth", not just to a privileged few. Thus, the way of obtaining this knowledge must be freely available to all.

Jesus Himself in fact told us where to look for truth. When praying to His Father in heaven, Jesus said:

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17: 17).

It is clearly then the word of God, the Bible, that gives us the truth. The whole life and teachings of Jesus and the Apostles are recorded there for anyone to read, study and obey. The knowledge of truth is not restricted by God to any particular class, group, religious hierarchy or society: it is freely and fully available to every man and woman upon this earth. It is to be found in God's book, the Bible.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works (II Timothy 3: 16-17).
