The Bible and Social Issues
Gary Young
The world today seems filled with all sorts of unsolvable problems. Drugs, teenage pregnancies, abortion, gambling and numerous other ills are everywhere to be seen, and very often there appears to be no solution readily available. One of the chief causes of these problems, of course, is the fact that people do not want to live by any set of rules - they want to do as they please. The Bible speaks of just the situation we see around us today:
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death (Proverbs 14: 12).
The Bible, however, has the answers to all the problems which we see in the world today. God has told us that His Word will be all the guide we need in order to have a good life upon this earth and to be saved in heaven at the end of our lives (II Timothy 3: 16-17). We ought therefore to turn to the Bible as our guide in life, instead of trying to "make it up as we go along" as so many people are doing today - unsuccesfully.
To take one example, we can compare the Bible's attitude toward marriage with that which we see in the word today. In the eyes of God, marriage is a holy and beautiful institution in which one man and one woman are joined together for life. Sexual relations outside the sanctity of marriage are seen as sinful and degrading, whereas within the bonds of marriage they are something entirely honourable. We see the Biblical principles regarding marriage in the following Scriptures:
Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge (Hebrews 13: 4).
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder (Matthew 19: 6).
What a contrast to the world's attitude of immorality, irresponsible sexual activity, quickie divorces and the like! But let us consider what would happen if all people followed God's instruction - how many problems would immediately be wiped out! Broken marriages, teenage pregnancies, as well as the numerous problems which grow from them, would all dispappear. We may not be able to bring this change about in the whole world, but we can bring them about in our own lives.
To many, the Bible's answers may seem archaic and irrelevant. To those people we say this - just try it! Reject the stranglehold the world has over you, and follow God instead! You will find that your life is blessed greatly when you follow Him. Here at the Eastside church of Christ we want to help you to follow God in your life.
