What is the Church of Christ?
Gary Young
In the Bible, we do not read of the hundreds of different denominations that we see in the world today. We do not read of Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox or any other "type" of Church, we simply read of one church that Jesus Himself founded, and of which He is the head (Matthew 16: 18; Ephesians 1: 22-23). We read that this church should be one in doctrine (I Corinthians 1: 10), and that it can be so when we drop all the traditions and commandments of men and follow only the pattern that is found in the New Testament (Romans 6: 17-18).
At the Eastside church of Christ, we do not want to belong to any religious organisation or denomination that is of human origin. We only want to be a part of the one church that we can read about in the Bible, the church of Christ.
The churches of Christ salute you (Romans 16: 16).
For this reason, we reject all creeds and confessions of faith, because these are not found in the Bible. In the Bible we are forbidden from adding to or taking away from anything that God has commanded, so if we bind a creed upon the church then we are adding something to what God has said. Jesus expressly forbids us from doing this:
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15: 9).
We also reject any worship that is not found in the New Testament. As we look at the Bible, there is a way of worship that God has authorised, and He does not permit us to add our own innovations. Similarly, the congregations of the New Testament were autonomous and independent, so we do not have any of the hierarchy or organisation that men have added to God's pattern. Synods, Cardinals, Archbishops, Councils or any other organisation above the congregational level are not found in the Word of God, and so the church of Christ does not have them.
We believe that by following the Bible in all things, by not adding any of man's innovations or modifications to God's pattern, we can simply be a part of that church we read about in the Bible, and not of any other. It is in that church that salvation is to be found, and not in any body of man's creation.
...the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood (Acts 20: 28b).
